About
Immersive concert-performance.
Subtera is a nine-month immersive concert-performance led by Ralf Schmid in Freiburg, Germany. It combines live music, game dramaturgy, ecological sensing, audience interaction, and real-time visuals to create a responsive sonic ecosystem inspired by soil processes. Through rehearsals, prototype testing, and public performances at Kreativzentrum Lokhalle, participants experience decay, regeneration, balance, and invisible soil cycles through sound and visuals. The project addresses the perception gap around soil microbiomes and creates emotional engagement with soil health.
Project overview
Perception gap around soil microbiomes and chemical cycles; engagement deficit with soil data; ecological amnesia and urban disconnection from living soil dynamics.
Music and dramaturgy concept by 15 May; prototype and test audience session 29 May–1 June; final rehearsals 20–28 July; performances 29–30 July; tour scaling by 15 October.
Turns scientific data into interactive sound and visuals to bridge intellectual understanding and emotional connection.
