Soil Story
Ireland
About
Theatre work for a young audience.
Soil Story is a six-month theatre and early childhood soil literacy initiative led by Soil Studio in County Sligo, Ireland. Created for young children aged 3 to 6 years, Soil Story is told from the perspective of the humble worm and has been developed with early childhood care and education settings.
Through theatre, music, movement and a story—soil’s story, in fact—young children get to meet, hold and care for real living worms and connect with soil as a living, breathing ecosystem.
The project aims to build ecological empathy and create ripple effects in early childhood settings, families and local communities across Sligo.
Project overview
Low soil literacy and limited meaningful early-childhood engagement with soil, alongside threats such as compaction, nutrient overload, biodiversity loss, and wider soil degradation.
Develop and perform Soil Story in 12 early childhood settings; co-create a script with young children; connect workshops to wormeries, food and leaf composting; generate creative resources.
Builds soil literacy and ecological empathy among young children through performance, sensory exploration, wormeries, leaf composting, and educator/family resources.
