SOIL STORIES: A Science-Art Alliance for Living Soil Literacy
Spain, Italy
About
Soil literacy through art, education, and regenerative agriculture.
SOIL STORIES is a nine-month science-art alliance led by Teatro Magro in Italy and Spain, with key activities at Finca la Furriola in Granada. Artists, scientists, educators, and land stewards exchange methods: artists learn soil science techniques, while scientists and educators learn narrative, embodied, and sensory tools. The project develops performances, participatory installations, workshops, and a trilingual open-access toolkit. It responds to Mediterranean soil degradation by creating accurate, creative, and emotionally engaging pathways for soil literacy and public action.
Project overview
Mediterranean soil degradation, declining organic matter and biodiversity, and the gap between scientific accuracy and emotionally resonant public communication.
Phase 1 foundations and exchange; Phase 2 creation and prototyping; Phase 3 dissemination and scaling; final conference and toolkit launch; impact assessment at EXPERIMENTA Biennale.
Provides direct experience through residencies, public engagement through performances and installations, and replication through a trilingual toolkit and trained multipliers.
