About

Soil regeneration through post-wildfire recovery and community action.

From Ash to Living Soil (Ash2Soil) is a 12-month community-driven initiative led by PRIP – Prout Research Institute Portugal in the Cova da Beira region. The project supports post-wildfire soil regeneration through four seasonal events focused on agroforestry, biochar, water retention, and native forest planting. It combines scientific monitoring, ecological practices, artistic outputs, community learning, a documentary, a toolkit, and a traveling exhibition. Its impact is to strengthen soil literacy, restore fire-affected landscapes, and build long-term stewardship.

Project overview

01.
Soil-related Challenge

Wildfire-related soil degradation, organic matter loss, disrupted microbiomes, erosion, reduced water retention, declining fertility, and weak community engagement.

03.
Main Activities & Milestones

Spring event on agroforestry; summer biochar; autumn water retention; winter native forest planting; baseline and final monitoring; toolkit; documentary; artistic outputs; online multiplier; traveling exhibition.

02.
Contribution to Soil Literacy & Soil Health

Translates scientific knowledge into hands-on field interventions and artistic activities, promoting soil as a living ecosystem and supporting regenerative practices with monitoring and open data.

04.
Implemented By

PRIP – Prout Research Institute Portugal, ARTivos Associação Cultural, EcoAtivo, Food4Sustainability CoLAB
