
Citizen Science in Action: 205 Participants Join the Romania SoilBlitz
From 14 to 29 May 2026, citizens, students, and local community members in Cluj-Napoca became active contributors to soil health monitoring through the Romania SoilBlitz Data Collection activity.
Organized by AgroTransilvania Cluster at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca, the activity engaged 205 participants across four dates: 14, 24, 25, and 29 May.
Through hands-on testing and local data collection, participants explored how simple citizen-science methods can make soil health more visible, understandable, and connected to community action.
Testing soil through citizen science
The activity followed the ECSA SoilBlitz methodology and invited participants to interact directly with soil through practical testing.
Depending on the session, activities included soil fertility testing, pH and NPK testing, and soil infiltration-rate testing. These methods supported participants in observing different aspects of soil health while contributing to the collection of local data.
The practical format helped translate scientific concepts into an accessible experience. Rather than only learning about soil through presentations or written information, participants collected evidence, observed results, and explored how soil conditions can be assessed at the local level.
Exceeding the participation target
The Romania SoilBlitz engaged 205 active participants, exceeding the SoilTribes KPI target of 200 active participants per Soil Lab Activator.
This strong participation demonstrated the value of citizen science as a tool for increasing soil literacy. It also showed that people from different backgrounds can contribute meaningfully to soil monitoring when provided with accessible methods and practical guidance.
Connecting local data with wider soil awareness
The SoilBlitz created an opportunity for participants to connect scientific knowledge with direct observation. At the same time, the data collected contributed to a better local understanding of soil conditions in Cluj-Napoca.
Every test, observation, and data point can strengthen our understanding of the soil beneath us and support more informed action to protect it.
