Soil Symphony

Portugal, France

About

Soil literacy through art, data, and citizen action.

Soil Symphony is a nine-month art-science initiative led by Future Measures in Portugal and France. The project uses low-cost sensors to measure live soil and plant signals and translates them into music, making soil health audible for citizens, educators, and local communities. Through micro-remediation plots, workshops, teacher/animator clinics, and public showcases, participants connect soil indicators with practical soil-care actions such as mulching, careful watering, reduced trampling, and phytoremediation. The project will publish an open Kit of Parts to support replication by schools, municipalities, and cultural venues.

Project overview

01.
Soil-related Challenge

Soil degradation is widespread but invisible to citizens and decision-makers, with salinity, pollution, drought, compaction, erosion, and weak stewardship limiting soil protection.

03.
Main Activities & Milestones

Coordination and ethics setup; sensor-to-music prototype; two micro-remediation plots; citizen workshops; teacher/animator clinic; public showcases; evaluation; open Kit of Parts.

02.
Contribution to Soil Literacy & Soil Health

Translates live soil and plant data into sound so participants can hear soil stress and restoration. Workshops connect sensory learning with practical soil-care actions.

04.
Implemented By

Future Measures LDA, FMICA Association (France), SAFPEM Institute (France)
